Our founder and CEO, Rosalyn Arntzen, sat down for an interview on She Did It Her Way, a weekly podcast for and about female entrepreneurs. During the podcast, Rosalyn discussed:
- Where she developed her leadership style
- What life changes she made to maintain the high energy levels needed to run a business
- How she went from owning her own business, to being a corporate professional, then back to business owner again
After a stint as the head of her own training business in the 1990s, Rosalyn shuttered her company to work in the corporate world—first at Unisys UK and then at Microsoft. Transferring to Microsoft headquarters in the early 2000s, Rosalyn proved herself during the amazingly successful Windows XP launch and, after excelling at a number of other positions across Microsoft, became a Communications Director for one of the company’s senior executives.
Interestingly, the intense crucible of Microsoft also inspired part of Rosalyn’s current management style. “I want to be the manager I would have wanted,” she said. Seeing a business opportunity to help companies deploy productivity technologies, she started Amaxra in 2007. It was a risky move at the time, as Rosalyn noted during her podcast interview. “When you don’t know what to do,” she said. “Go start a company in the middle of a recession.”
Owning a business means the buck stops here; often resulting in very long hours that can take a physical toll. Fortunately, Rosalyn’s experiences in corporate life meant she was used to working hard—and knew it can be unhealthy. “I can survive off of four to five hours of sleep a night,” she said in her interview. “But ‘surviving’ is not going to lead to long term health and, more importantly, enable you to be a true leader.”
Approaching her company’s tenth year in business, Rosalyn says that she’s learned a lot since Amaxra’s founding—knowledge that’s helped her to not only grow her business but give back to others.
